Canelo Alvarez Says Fights Are Chosen for Legacy Since Money is No Issue
Undisputed 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (57-1-2, 39KOs) is gearing up for a return to the light heavyweight division. He’ll take on WBA champion Dimitry Bivol (19-0, 11KOs) on May 7. The Mexican superstar and number one pound for pound fighter in the world is a highly sought-after fighter.
Prior to finalizing a two-fight deal with DAZN, Canelo weighed a similar two-fight offer from PBC. The contract which would have included him taking on WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo in May and former WBC super middleweight champion David Benavidez in September. However, he elected to rekindle his working relationship with Eddie Hearn and DAZN.
Now that the ink has dried up on the contract and everything has been formally announced, he’s opened up about his decision.
IT MATTERS NOT
In an interview with ESNEWS, he talked about money not being an issue no matter where or with whom he decides to fight.
“I care about everything ,right, but my mind just wants to make history. That’s it. Like I say, whatever option is for me, the money is there. “
Alvarez has caught flack about his decision to make an about-face and head back to DAZN. Not necessarily because of the Bivol fight, it’s more so about the unwanted and unneeded trilogy bout with IBF middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (41-1-1, 36KOs) that’s to follow, assuming he’s victorious in May against Bivol. But as he stated, no matter where he elects to take his services, he’s going to win monetarily regardless of the outcome inside the squared circle.
Just like his predecessors, Floyd Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao, he’s using his clout and status as the face of boxing to determine what big fights we see or don’t see in the divisions he so chooses to fight in. Be as it, and whether you like it or not, Alvarez will continue to run boxing until he hangs up the gloves.
