Jermell Charlo drops truth bomb on Oscar De La Hoya
Unified junior middleweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (34-1, 18ko) was minding his business training for his upcoming undisputed bout with WBO champion Brian “El Boxi” Castano (17-0-1, 12ko) set for July 17. Then all of a sudden the Texas champion found himself entangled in a war of words between promoter Oscar De La Hoya and Mexican mega-star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
De La Hoya has been quite bitter since Alvarez left the boxing brand that made him a household name. Back in 2019, Alvarez was WBC Middleweight champion and Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo was his mandatory. However, Alvarez would elude the fight by becoming the first-ever recipient of the infamous WBC franchise champion status. During De La Hoya’s social media outburst, he hinted that Alvarez his mandatory WBC Interim challenger, Jermall Charlo. The WBC organization, shortly afterwards, elevated Charlo from Interim to full champion.
The most interesting part is Oscar De La Hoya made a glaring mistake in his dirt shoveling. While trying to reveal dirt on Alvarez, he inadvertently tagged Jermell instead of Jermall. By now, he should know which brother is which, especially considering he wanted to make a massive doubleheader featuring both Charlo brothers. Alvarez was going to fight Jermall, and Jaime Munguia was to face Jermell.
Iron Man decided, since he was tagged into this theatrical drama, to play his role. He dropped a bombshell on how a fight with Alvarez was supposed to happen back in 2014, but Golden Boy Promotions changed gears and went with James Kirkland instead.
Furthermore, he let it be known he is no longer interested in fighting boxing’s biggest earner.
