Morrell Stoppage Motivates Zak Chelli to Call Out Benavidez
Domestic-level fighter Zak Chelli scored the huge upset by stopping two-divisional champion David Morrell in the final round. After the fight, the Brit called out two-divisional champion “El Monstruo” David Benavidez (32-0, 26KO).
Despite being beaten throughout the fight, Chelli (17-3-1, 9KO) was finding a home for the right hand in the middle rounds. In round nine, he landed a hard overhand right that wobbled the Cuban, who was saved by the bell. He went on to land a barrage of shots in round ten that forced the referee to stop the fight.
Morrell (12-2, 9KO) was supposed to face Callum Smith, who had to pull out because of an injury. When it was announced that Chelli was the replacement, several pundits, including this author, felt Morrell would win easily. The Cuban will need to ask himself a serious question following this defeat.
Feeling confident, Chelli quickly called out the El Monstruo. In addition, he pointed out that Benavidez didn’t stop Morrell either.
“Did Benavidez do that? No, No, I did. Bring him along…I want a world title.”
Beating Morrell is one thing, but Benavidez is a different breed of fighter. However, you can’t blame Team Chelli for wanting to cash in on such a shocking upset.
