Cheavon Clarke Overcomes Adversity en route to Stopping Massey
Cruiserweight Cheavon “C4” Clarke (12-2, 9KO) got off the canvas twice to score a sensational seventh-round stoppage over Jack “One Smack” Massey (23-4, 13KO). Next up could be a rematch with Viddal Riley or Leonardo Mosquea.
The fight started with both men throwing bombs early. However, One Smack was landing the more painful shots and dropped Clark twice in round four. Yet, C4 came out in the next two rounds, landing body shots, taking advantage of Massey’s lack of activity.
Then in round seven, he landed a powerful overhand right that put Massey on the canvas. With a wounded opponent in front of him, Clarke forced the referee to stop the fight after landing hard shots repeatedly.
Although he claimed to be willing to fight anyone, a rematch with Riley would be interesting. The EBU European titlist is coming off a victory over one-time title challenger Mateusz Masternak on April 4. With a possible title fight on the horizon, Riley may not be a viable option.
Then there is Mosquea, who will be fighting on June 9. If he is victorious, it would create solid buzz for a rematch. One thing is for certain: this victory has rejuvenated Clarke’s career for the moment.
