Oscar Collazo Expecting a Great Fight with Garen Diagan
On August 26, Oscar “El Pupilo” Collazo (7-0, 5 KOs) makes the first defense of the WBO minimumweight title against Garen Diagan (10-3, 5 KOs) at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The defending champion is fighting in his home country. He wants to impress and have a dominant performance.
It’s been a meteoric rise for Collazo. Observers of the sport believe the 26-year-old is a future star in the lower-weight divisions. He captured the WBO title in May 2023 with a seventh-round stoppage over Melvin Jerusalem in May 2023.
He now will face Diagan. The 27-year-old Filipino is a solid veteran who owns a win over former world title challenger Simpiwe Konkco.
Speaking to Ring Magazine, Collazo said that after watching Diagan on film, he saw some things he could exploit. One of the weaknesses that Collazo noticed was that Diagan tended to drop his lead hand, which made him vulnerable to counterpunches.
GIVING A MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE
The champion has respect for the challenger. But when all things are said and done, Collazo said he’s confident he has enough to get the job done and will leave the ring with the WBO strap firmly wrapped around his waist.
“I think it’s a very interesting fight. He comes from the Philippines, where a lot of good boxers come from, and they come to fight.”
“He’s coming in with nothing to lose, and I think it’s going to be a great fight. It’s going to be an action-packed fight. I’m going to demonstrate my skills and my IQ in the ring as always and put on a show in front of my fans.”
Collazo has aspirations of being a unified champion in 2024. To get the opportunity to achieve that goal, he must take care of on August 26.
