Both Richard Commey and Isa Chaniev agree to face Vasyl Lomachenko if one wins
Earlier,3kingsboxing reported Top Rank wanted to bypass facing WBA mandatory challenger Anthony Crolla in hopes of facing the winner of the IBF lightweight title fight.
It seems they are not the only ones wanting to make that fight. It’s now being rumored that both, Commey and Chaniev have signed on to face unified champion Vasyl Lomachenko. That is, provided a winner is declared.
This is great news and step one of the plan. The WBA will more than likely grant the exception, given that the next fight would be a unification bout.
Both IBF title challengers will undoubtedly leave it all in the ring with the stakes being even higher now. If the WBA grants the exception this will be a second consecutive unification bout for Lomachenko.
The wait from the governing sanctioning body continues, but there should be an answer given sometime soon.
Top Rank has been pushing the needle very hard to make quality fights with the full support of ESPN, who is providing the platform for big fights without taking away fighters’ promotional rights.
This has served their brand, and the fans, very well. The question will be whether the unification bout will be televised or streamed on the ESPN+ app.
Give both men credit. It’s rare in boxing you see fighters willing to make huge decisions like this moments before the biggest fight of their careers.
Commey vs Chaniev fight for the vacant title February 2, in Frisco, Texas on the under-card of the Alvarez vs Kovalev rematch.
