Shannon Courtenay Hopes to Rematch Jamie Mitchell Before 2023
Back in October of 2021, Jamie “The Miracle” Mitchell (8-0-2, 5KOs) traveled to the backyard of former WBA bantamweight women’s champion Shannon “The Baby Faced Assassin” Courtenay (7-2, 3KOs) to win the title in dominant fashion. In the aftermath, Courtenay placed the blame for her off-night on her injured knee. However, prior to even stepping foot in the ring, she would lose her title on the scale as she was unable to make weight, which she blamed on her menstrual cycle.
Since their fight, Mitchell has gone on to make a successful defense of her title, knocking out Carly Skelly in four rounds back in February. In March, the WBA champion expressed her desire to have the rematch with Courtenay take place in America since she traveled over to the UK for her title opportunity. Up until recently, there had been no word on when The Miracle would return to the ring. However, in one of her most recent posts on July 15 on social media, she teased that fight news was coming soon.
CHASING REDEMPTION
As for Courtenay, she’s eager for a shot at redemption. In an interview back in May with iFL TV, The Baby Faced Assassin talked about her recovery from knee surgery as well as the Mitchell rematch.
“I’ve just been working on getting my injury better; physio non-stop, just trying to get my leg fixed, really. Working hard.”
On Training:
“Yep, I’m not back in camp, I’m just working. I’ve got physios I’m working with. I’m working with JJK, and Glen to strengthen my leg up, and obviously running every day. Bag work, well not pads yet because I’m not explosive enough yet, but I’m getting there.”
On her next fight:
“We’re looking at August […] We’re looking at coming back on an eight-rounder and then going and winning that, which hopefully we will then go into the rematch with Jamie Mitchell. So I’d like to have at least two fights before the end of the year. So, have an eight-rounder so I can come back, fight, see how the new knee is and go straight into the rematch with Mitchell. “
Well it seems as if the two ladies will indeed rekindle their rivalry later this year. Assuming, of course, everything goes well with Courtenay’s comeback fight and Mitchell has no hiccups in her next title defense.
