Shannon Courtenay Reveals Health Issues Prior to Jamie Mitchell Fight

In 2021, boxing was overwhelmed with upsets at an uncommon rate. WBA bantamweight champion Jamie “The Miracle” Mitchell (8-0-2, 5 KO’s) was part of the upset conversation after defeating Shannon “The Baby Face Assassin” Courtenay (7-2, 3 KO’s), who is looking for a rematch.

Before their meeting in the ring, Courtenay had lost the title on the scale after missing weight due to an unforeseen menstrual cycle. The Baby Face Assassin was heartbroken about losing the title in this fashion, especially with this being the first defense of the championship after capturing the vacant title against Ebanie Bridges on April 2021.

The Miracle went on the immediate body attack, looking to exploit the weight issues of the champion. Besides winning the bout, Mitchell had to deal with a delusional former champion saying that she did not lose the fight.

COURTENAY WAS NOT FULLY HEALTHY

During an interview with iFL TV, Courtenay went deeper into other issues she was having health-wise that were unknown to the boxing community.

“What people don’t realize is I had an ACL rupture. I couldn’t use my legs, I physically really couldn’t move properly the entire fight. Forget that, the entire camp I was in agony. I had to wear a brace the entire time […]”

She explained the reason for accepting the fight despite not being in top physical conditioning.

“I had no choice. I had to fight. If I didn’t, they were going to take the belt off me, regardless. A lot going up to that fight wasn’t right. The week going up to the fight wasn’t right.”

Courtenay made it clear that she is no longer dealing with any more health issues. Furthermore, she explained how things are going to be completely different in a rematch.

“Now I have two working legs. I do believe I’ll stop Jamie Mitchell.”
