Amanda Serrano elevated to WBC featherweight champion; becomes unified for first time ever!

Seven-division world champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (39-1-1, 29KOs) took to her personal YouTube channel to announce that she is now the WBC Women’s Featherweight champion. How she got into position to become the WBC featherweight champion stems back from her fight with former WBO Featherweight champion Heather “The Heat” Hardy (22-1, 4KOs) in September of 2019. Serrano would challenge for WBO title with the WBC Interim Featherweight title also on the line. The Puerto Rican would dominate the fight, winning a easy unanimous decision.

HOW SHE GOT HERE!

Former unified women’s featherweight champion Jelena Mrdjenovich (41-10-2, 19KOs) held the WBC and WBA titles until recently. Being the champion of the WBC, Mrdjenovich was mandated to fight Serrano, who was the interim champion. However, for whatever reasons, the fight did not materialize.

A SURPRISING FIRST FOR SERRANO!

In the process of her announcement she revealed something pretty surprising. A seven-division world champion, astonishingly enough Serrano has never ever been a unified champion, she revealed.

“Guys I’m super excited to be apart of the WBC organization, I am now the unified champion. It’s bitter sweet, bitter sweet because there’s nothing better of course than beating the champion. I actually wanted to fight with Jelena, she actually has two of the belts, but now I have two of the belts. It would have been sweet to fight her, but you know it is what it is. They elevated me to full champion. What am I supposed to say, ‘no, take it back?’ But eventually I want that WBA title, so I have to fight Jelena. Whenever she’s ready, we’re obviously up for it. I just hope she’s going to come take her title back, she wants her title back, we have to fight for it.

But I am super excited to be apart of the WBC family now. I am a unified champion, something I’ve never been. I’m super excited, the team is excited and I want to thank the WBC once again.”

Again, that is some surprising news that a fighter as great as Serrano has never been a unified champion. This is especially considering the seven different weight classes she has campaigned at over the course of her twelve-year career.
