Oscar De La Hoya Blacklists Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda
In his last tour of duty, lightweight contender William “Camaron” Zepeda (29-0, 25 KO’s) tore through Mercito Gesta in six short rounds. Naturally, he and Golden Boy Promotions (GBP) are elated with the recent win. In fact, company face Oscar De La Hoya is prepared to put his charge in the ring with the biggest and best that the division has to offer. Well, everyone but one “Fearless” Shakur Stevenson (20-0, 10 KO’s)!
“The one fight that I would love right now is [Devin] Haney . . . I would love to face him against [Isaac Cruz] Pitbull. In an all Mexican war, think about that, in Las Vegas, two Mexicans for next Cinco de Mayo! I would put him against anyone right now. The only one that I would [not face him against] is Shakur [Stevenson]! Shakur is a bad motherfucker!”
“Tank [Gervonta Davis], I would love to face him against Tank. And he is great as well, every single one that I mentioned is great, we would love to fight, he is ready!”
IF NOT HIM, THEN WHO?!
Without question, Camaron’s star is certainly on the rise. Ranked #2 (WBA), #5 (WBC), #6 (WBO) and #6 (IBF), he has organically maneuvered himself into position for a title shot which should be coming shortly. Yet, it is somewhat odd, or at least off putting, to hear his promoter use such naked vernacular to side step a potential showdown with Fearless. This is further underscored by De La Hoya explicitly calling out all the remaining top fighters in the division,
Obviously, De La Hoya harbors great trepidation about putting Zepeda in with Stevenson. Yet, given his open door policy in regards to everyone else, it will be very interesting to see who Golden Boy Promotions throws Camaron in with next. No matter who it is however, 3Kings Boxing will be right here to report the latest boxing hubbub.
