Joseph Diaz vs Jesus Rojas just got interesting! The WBA regular title will now be on the line!
As reported earlier by 3kingsboxing.com Diaz/Rojas will take place August 11 as part of a streaming deal, between Golden Boy Promotions and Facebook.
It now appears this fight will also be for the WBA regular featherweight championship. Puerto Rico’s Rojas was elevated to regular champion by the WBA making this fight very significant.
Diaz has got to be happy about this move as he recently lost a title shot against WBC champion Gary Russell Jr. This will be an immediate second chance at becoming a world champion.
Rojas won the interim WBA featherweight title by knocking out Claudio Marrero in September 2017. This news will mark his first defense since being elevated to regular champion.
Both men also hope this leads to a showdown with WBA super featherweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz of course has been in talks for a unification bout with Russell Jr.
It is also worth noting that the winner of this fight may have to defend the title against the winner of, Jhack Tepora (21-0, 16 KO’s ) vs Edivaldo Ortega (26-1-1, 12 KO’s). That bout will be for Rojas’ vacated WBA interim title.
The Mexican vs Puerto Rican rivalry along with a title on line is worth our attention. Both men will be looking to make a bold statement. One fighter wants to hold on to the title and the other wants to fulfill a life long dream.
