Leonard Ellerbe squashes Floyd Mayweather comeback rumors!
Even while comfortably nestled in his retirement, boxing cash cow Floyd “Money” Mayweather (50-0, 27 KO’s) still has a knack for grabbing attention. Whether capturing headlines by making controversial statements or showing off some of his many toys and trinkets or teasing workout footage, he has consistently remained in the forefront of the public consciousness.
So it should come as no surprise that following a recent volley of workout videos posted to his social media, speculations began to fly. As it often is, the visual of a seemingly fight-ready “Money” Mayweather assisting various boxers in the ring has worked many into a lather.
Somewhere in the middle of all the chatter emerged a rumor saying that he may return to the ring to face the always-controversial Adrien “The Problem” Broner (33-4-1, 24 KO’s).
MAYBE, BUT PROBABLY NOT!
On one hand, the notion of Money coming back for Broner is not outright malarkey. In terms of their preexisting storyline, it makes a great deal of sense. The two share a long intertwining history, both know how to drum up headlines and each definitely know how to sell a fight!
However, Broner has not been able to celebrate an in-ring victory since he beat Adrian Granados in 2017. Even worse, his last victory over a notable marquee name was in 2013 when in against Paul Malignaggi. These damning facts made this theoretical comeback fight come off as rather dubious.
To end all speculating, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe has come forward to vigorously deny any such bout was in the making. As reported by Yahoo Sports, Ellerbe called the claim:
“1 million percent false, total silliness.”
NEW BEGINNINGS
It’s not surprising to hear that this was merely wishful thinking at best. Although he faced young, undefeated kick-boxer Tenshin Nasukawa in a “special rules” exhibition in 2018, the former welterweight kingpin has not fought in a sanctioned boxing match since his 2017 quasi-crossover bout with MMA superstar “The Notorious” Connor McGregor.
Prior, Mayweather’s last “boxer v boxer” prizefight was staged in 2015 against Andre “The Beast” Berto (32-5, 24 KO’s) before his second retirement.
After suffering a substantial amount of calamity and loss within his own family, the only in-ring role that Mayweather has shown interest in is that of a trainer. This is precisely why the bulk of his recent Instagram posts have been of himself assisting up-and-coming boxers.
So just like that, as quickly as the rumors sprang up, they were weeded out just as swiftly.
