Erickson Lubin wants Revenge on Jermell Charlo

All too often after suffering a particularly nasty knockout, fighters display a visible drop in aggression in their following fights. Something about getting concussed seems to inject many pugilists with a new air of caution. This has not proven to be the case with super welterweight contender Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin (22-1, 16 KO’s).

Since dropping his only career loss to WBC world super welterweight champion Jermell “Iron Man” Charlo (33-1, 17 KO’s) back in 2017, Lubin has racked up four impressive victories. Three of those four wins have come by way of stoppage. Not only was The Hammer able to prevail in grand fashion, he did not manifest any apprehension or lack of self-confidence. Now, in a recent interview with Premier Boxing Champions, Lubin provided more insight into his loss and current goals.

“It didn’t just play a role inside of boxing, it played a role outside too because I feel like it helped me. It was like a character defining type of loss. When I lost, I was trying to rebuild, trying to see who is still with me, who’s my friends and I was still trying to figure out things.

I went in there pretty young. I do admit that it was probably a bit early, but the way that skillset is and my mindset, I felt like I was ready for that fight. And I felt like I wanted to get in there so quick and become a star so soon, but God had different plans for me. We bounce back, we still bounce back and right now I am sitting at #1 in the WBC, so a rematch is in the near future.”

HARD TO KEEP DOWN

Lubin has always established major goals for himself and he was unwilling to let one bump in the road halt his journey. Now that his career is firmly back on the right track, Lubin feels that he is just a fight or so away from another title shot.

Yet, if left up to him to decide, Lubin would love to get a rematch with Charlo. It’s certainly not a farfetched notion. When considering that The Hammer is already ranked #1 by the WBC, he is technically already in a prime position to attempt a bit of get-back.

“He is trying to buy time or he is trying to find a different route or end up moving up or something. I’m not ducking no smoke, Jermell Charlo is a great fighter. I am not taking anything away from him, there are a lot of great fighters in this division…but I feel like I am the best at 154 and a rematch with Charlo is something that I definitely want just to put a stamp on it.”

ONE DAY SOON

Unfortunately, simply ranking #1 does not automatically guarantee one a shot at the champion. Until the WBC officially names him as the mandatory challenger, there is no way for Lubin to force Charlo into a rematch. Providing another serious hurdle is the Hit Man’s professed lack of desire to dance with the hard-hitting Floridian again.

Luckily, Erickson Lubin believes that he can accurately guess how Charlo feels about the matter. Understanding that a rematch is far from the top of the WBC super welterweight champions mind, he is prepared to do what he must to prove that he is truly the man to beat in the division.

“He took the first fight and did what he had to do the first fight. So I mean psychologically, he’s probably feeling like he sees the process and he sees how much I’ve matured in the ring and maybe is trying to catch me when I am vulnerable or something. But now is not the time. I am a very dangerous fighter right now and nobody at 154lbs can beat me right now as we speak.”
