Jaron Ennis Must Outclass Xander Zayas

On Saturday, June 27, Jaron “Boots” Ennis must bring his A-game and win in dominating fashion against unified 154-pound champion Xander Zayas. The Philadelphia challenger can’t win a close contest; otherwise, several fans and pundits will question his future in the division.

When Top Rank signed with DAZN, it was obvious Zayas was going to fight Ennis, especially when the fight with Vergil Ortiz fell apart. Boxing fans are excited to see two undefeated young Lions in the ring battling for division supremacy. The winner of the fight will be seen as the top dog of the division.

All credit must be given to both fighters and promotional companies for making the fight happen without any drama. With that being said, it’s time to take a deeper look at who is under the most pressure going into the fight.

ALL EYES ON ENNIS

Zayas (23-0, 13KO) is not to be underestimated. He is a big junior middleweight with a solid skillset, and can punch. In addition, he’s basically been learning on the job since becoming a pro at 17 years old. The Puerto Rican unified champion has struggled at times but has also shown improvement.

Ennis (35-0, 31KO), on the other hand, enters the ring under a microscope. He must look spectacular in victory; a knockout victory will skyrocket him to the top of the mountain. The Philadelphian needs to turn in the same type of performance we saw against one-time WBA 147-pound champion Eimantas Stanionis.

A dominant performance is a necessity is due to the fact that he is viewed as the sports next big star. In boxing, when the lights are bright, the superstars of the sport must shine even brighter. This is the moment Team Ennis has been waiting for, a high-profile match that has captured the attention of all of boxing.
