Hanna Gabriels Open To Fight with Cecilia Braekhus at 154
Three-division champion Hanna “La Amazona” Gabriels (21-2-1, 12KOs) is looking for a fight! This comes after her August 13 title defense against number 7 ranked contender Angie Paola Rocha was postponed. This was due to one of the trainers of Rocha testing positive for COVID-19.
Last April, Gabriels won the inaugural WBA light heavyweight title, stopping Martha Gaytán in two rounds. In the process, she also picked up the vacant WBC women’s heavyweight title. At 39 years old, time could be winding down on her career. Gabriels’ ambition is to become the undisputed women’s light heavyweight champion.
However, a possible showdown against former long-reigning undisputed 147-pound champion Cecilia Braekhus (36-2, 9KOs) is also on her radar. Braekhus will make her junior middleweight debut on August 13 against WBC champion Patricia Berghult.
A DREAM FIGHT FOR GABRIELS!
After she presumably handles her business at light heavyweight, a drop in weight to her natural weight class of 154 is possible.
“I saw that Cecilia Braekhus has moved up. This has been a fight I’ve always wanted to do. When I was 154, there were opportunities, but for one thing or another, it didn’t happen. I think this is the time for us to meet. “
With the pickings pretty slim at light heavyweight and heavyweight, Gabriels could elect to go straight into a fight with Braekhus if she defeats Berghult for the WBC title. However, all of that is just pure speculation on this writer’s behalf. Needless to say, that would be a very good fight for both ladies and for the fans of women’s boxing.
