Is Gervonta Davis Eying a Showdown With Devin Haney in 2024?
Reigning WBA Regular lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) is one of the more popular fighters in the sport. Fans are waiting for his return to the ring and wondering what he has in store for 2024. Could it include a battle against reigning unified 135-pound champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (30-0, 15 KOs)?
DROPPING A TEASER?
Over the years, they’ve had their fair share of verbal exchanges. Their latest exchange of words centers around Shakur Stevenson’s unanimous decision victory over Edwin De Los Santos to win the vacant WBC lightweight title on November 16.
Haney went to social media to criticize Stevenson’s performance. Davis responded with a now-deleted message for Haney.
MORE THAN JUST TALK?
The reaction from Davis has received quite the reaction and fueled speculation that he has been in contact with the Haney camp. Tank has been out of the ring since a seventh-round stoppage over Ryan Garcia in April 2023. Team Davis is on the record that they are interested in a matchup with Haney.
The Irony is, were it to occur, it would likely be at 140 pounds. Haney will challenge WBC junior welterweight champion Regis Prograis on December 9. Were Haney to defeat Prograis, many boxing insiders believe The Dream would stay at 140.
That would not be a problem for Davis, who once held the WBA Regular title at junior welterweight. A Haney versus Davis battle would capture the attention of the boxing public and surely land on pay-per-view.
A Davis criticism has been that he has yet to fight an elite fighter in their prime. Tank can shut up the critics by facing Haney.
Sometimes, a message can be a double entendre, carrying multiple meanings. This appears to be the case for Davis, which would delight all boxing enthusiasts.
