A Spur of the Moment Meeting Results in Gervonta Davis Facing Trouble Again

Trouble continues to find Gervonta “Tank” Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) as he must serve the rest of his 90-day house arrest in jail. According to news source, The Baltimore Banner, Davis was taken into custody and booked in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland following an impromptu hearing. During that hearing, Judge Althea Handy ordered Davis must serve jail time after it was determined that the fighter violated the terms of his house arrest.

Davis has emerged as one of the sport’s superstars. The reigning WBA Regular lightweight champion is coming off a seventh-round knockout over Ryan Garcia on April 22. The bout was a huge financial success. Afterward, Davis anointed him as the face of boxing.

CAN’T KEEP HIS HEAD ON STRAIGHT

However, despite Davis’ growing popularity, he is a controversial figure. On May 5, he was sentenced to a 90-day house arrest and 200 hours of community service for his involvement in a hit-and-run accident in November 2020. As of this writing, it’s unclear how many days Davis must spend in jail.

This should not have any significant impact on his boxing future. Davis’ camp has expressed a strong interest in a match-up with undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney. Haney is contemplating whether he should stay at 135 following a May 20 unanimous decision victory over Vasyl Lomachenko. Should Haney decide to stick around at lightweight, a matchup against Tank would be one of the more important fights of the year.

Assuming that Davis keeps his head straight and will not have to serve any additional time in jail, a Haney – Davis lightweight super-fight is still in play. However, from a public relations perspective, it’s an embarrassing development for Davis.
