According to ESPN, WBC world lightweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (26-0, 15 KO’s) and reluctant challenger Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz (32-1-1, 15 KO’s) are one step closer to making a fight. The two have been engaged in heavy negotiations for the past several weeks. Apparently both sides have agreed to terms and the only thing that remains is to sign a contract. This will stand as great news for Team Haney who has been diligently scouring the division for an elite opponent.

For quite some time, the Dream has been doing a great impression of 50 Cent in his prime by calling out every adversary available. Despite his hazing, and ownership of the WBC title, Haney was unsuccessful securing the bouts that he sought after. Haney did fight the well-respected Jorge Linares in his last at-bat. Still, this rather senior boxer didn’t deliver the type of accolades that the Dream is searching for. Ideally, the would-be upcoming showdown with Diaz will change his fortune for the better.

YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?!

While one would like to assume this is a happy and energetic moment for Jo Jo, that is not a given assumption. Sure, the former super featherweight champion is taking the fight now but he’s long since had the opportunity. When Diaz defeated Javier Fortuna back on July 9, he became the interim WBC world lightweight champion and Haney’s mandatory. Instead of taking his title shot straight away, Jo Jo attempted to sidestep the Dream by penning a fight with Ryan Garcia.

Before Garcia and Diaz could put knuckle to skull with one another, Garcia pulled out citing injury as the culprit. Left without a dance partner and looking even more foolish for dodging Haney in the first place, Jo Jo appears to be finally stepping up to the plate. Given his previous hesitancy to sign-up for war with Haney, it’d probably be a good idea to wait for an official announcement though! Regardless of how the situation plays out, 3kingsboxing will be here to report the news!
