Devin Haney Could Face Sandor Martin if he Keeps his WBC Title
WBC junior welterweight champion Devin “The Dream” Haney (31-0, 15KO) pushed back on British promoter Eddie Hearn’s suggestion he’ll vacate the title. As a result, a bout with Sandor Martin could be an eventuality for Haney.
Following the final presser for the upcoming showdown featuring contenders Richardson Hitchins and Gustavo Lemos, Hearn explained to FightHype that Haney may vacate the title over facing #1 contender Sandor Martin.
“Sooner or later, after April 20, the WBC belt is going to become vacant. Sandor Martin vs someone is going to take place . . . he ain’t going to fight Sandor Martin. Who’s going to pay for that fight?”
“You got to take a tiny payday for that, and I don’t think Devin’s about that.”

LEGACY OVER MONEY
The Dream did not allow that statement to make the rounds within the boxing news cycle before responding.
Boxing fans shouldn’t be surprised, as Haney made it clear he wants to pursue undisputed. It is one of those rare situations where the fighter is picking legacy over money, as today’s fighters don’t have that mindset.
Martin has been holding down the number one spot with the WBC, and the organization will eventually order the fight. Many fans believe he should have gotten the nod over WBO champion Teofimo Lopez in December 2022. He is on a two-fight knockout win streak, be it against subpar competition.
Before the WBC champion can look toward Martin, he must deal with amateur rival Ryan Garcia. The two will finally settle things in the ring on April 20. In this author’s opinion, Haney is one of those fighters who truly wants to fight all the top guys.
So many times boxing fans see fighters talking about fighting best, but The Dream has been speaking loudly with his actions.
