Eddie Hearn not too enthusiastic about a potential Canelo vs Kovalev clash.
In a recent interview, Eddie Hearn told British media he feels Saul “Canelo” Alvarez should face WBO middleweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade next. Fact is, it’s a fight that’s been six years in the making!
Andrade has been consistent in his pursuit of Alvarez so much so that he’s followed from junior middleweight into the middleweight division, and joined DAZN to eliminate any promotional conflicts.
Alvarez is looking to make his ring return November 2 against WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev who just defended his title against #1 contender Anthony Yarde. The fight turned out to be a grueling one and team Kovalev have expressed concerns about such a quick return.
DAZN has been unable to influence Alvarez to take opponents they have approved.
Hearn’s recent comments reflect this:
“Demetrius Andrade is in the same boat as Billy Joe Saunders. A really good fighter, tough to beat. So for me, Canelo should be fighting Demetrius Andrade. He shouldn’t be fighting Kovalev. It’s a good fight, but he should be fighting other champions in the division.
“You can’t criticize Canelo, because his resume is so stellar. So it’s tough to say, ‘Oh, you’re not fighting.’ He just beat Danny Jacobs. So he wants to fight Kovalev. Again, that’s a tough fight. For me, if he’s not fighting GGG, which is the fight that he should have taken, then he should be fighting Demetrius Andrade.”
With Alvarez working on his next bout, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out with DAZN. To this point, the Mexican superstar has marched to the beat of his own drum thus far in his career. Also with Canelo’s brand being the marquee of DAZN’s boxing department, it’s imperative that both sides find some fights that build their brands.
