Hearn Doubts Golden Boy 5v5 Tournament Due to De La Hoya
This past June, chairman and boxing enthusiast Turki Alalshikh put together an entertaining and intriguing tournament called 5v5. In that competition, rival promotional companies Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry Promotions went head-to-head. Ultimately, the Queensberry squad would demolish Matchroom Boxing by winning every single fight. Despite those dreary results, Matchroom Boxing chairman Eddie Hearn believes he’d hand out the same beating to the Golden Boy Promotions stable.
In a recent sit-down session with Fight Hub TV, Hearn delved a bit into this particular subject.
“Honestly, Oscar has absolutely zero interest in doing business with us . . . that’s why he won’t do a 5v5! I hope his excellency turns around and watches all these videos and goes, ‘this is great, let’s do a 5v5’, because we would just exterminate the entire business in one tournament. But Oscar won’t do it because it’s just something inside him that burns him so bad about me.”
TO BE OR NOT TO BE
When the Matchroom Boxing versus Queensberry Promotions event took place, it was warmly received by the boxing public. Due to this response, it is a logical conclusion to believe that another tournament would also be welcomed by the public. Along these lines, pitting Matchroom versus Golden Boy would make for another great event. Not only are there some solid match-ups to be made, but Hearn and De La Hoya are seemingly very fond of taking shots at one another in the media.
Given this well-established background, this potential tournament would likely have a tremendous build-up period leading to meaningful results. Ideally the animosity of De La Hoya’s that Hearn referenced would not make realizing this event an impossibility. Yet, for the time being, all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best.
