Eddie Hearn Still Likes Julio Martinez Versus Sunny Edwards Unification

The entire boxing community will be glued to their televisions watching four-divisional champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KO’s) take on the WBC flyweight champion “El Rey” Julio Cesar Martinez (18-1, 14 KO’s). However, fans should not rule out a unification fight between Martinez and IBF champion Sunny “Showtime” Edwards.

In April 2021, Edwards changed the boxing landscape after taking the title away from long-time champion Moruti Mthalane. He would follow up that performance with another outstanding display of skill against then-undefeated contender Jayson Mama.

Edwards, during the post-fight interview, wasted little time in calling out fellow champion Martinez for a unification fight. Well, a hiccup came along that put the unification on the backburner. El Rey accepted a huge opportunity to replace two-divisional champion Juan Francisco Estrada to fight Gonzalez on March 5. Martinez wasted little time at jumping on the once-in-a-lifetime offer, leaving Edwards without a dance partner.

Edwards decided to drop some news of his own by announcing a fight with former title challenger Muhammad Waseem in Dubai on March 19. Unsure about the future, boxing fans wondered if the two fighters would meet up hopefully later down the line.

THERE IS HOPE THEY COULD STILL FIGHT

In being fair, this author wanted to see Martinez and Edwards square-off in a unification. However, nobody is disappointed with the current outcome. The magnitude of Gonzalez versus Martinez has been a huge buzz on social media.

During an interview with iFL TV at the weigh-in ahead of the Gonzalez and Martinez clash, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn gave offered hope on unification still being a possibility.

“Hopefully, whatever happens in this fight, I do see Martinez dropping back down to flyweight, and we’d still love to make the Sunny Edwards fight.”
