Benavidez Calls For Berlanga to Test Himself Against Caleb Plant

In a somewhat twist of fate, former super middleweight rivals David “The Monster” Benavidez (28-0, 24 KO’s) and Caleb “Sweethands” Plant (22-2, 13 KO’s) are singing the same tune. This unison came in relation to a potential match-up featuring Edgar “The Chosen One” Berlanga (22-0, 17 KO’s) and undisputed 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KO’s).

There is a great deal of industry talk alluding to Berlanga closing in on officially securing a fall duel with Alvarez. Yet, for his money, The Monster doesn’t feel like Berlanga should be able to skip the line. History has shown he probably won’t get the call. So instead, Benavide envisions a simple, fair and entertaining way of solving this problem.

“I heard that Edgar Berlanga is going to get the fight in September, I feel like if he is really going to get the fight, then they have to give him to Caleb Plant first and then the winner of that gets Canelo.”

THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY…

In the not too distant past, Benavidez and Plant were bitter enemies who spewed nothing but venom at the other. After fighting one another however, the two walked away with a healthy amount of mutual respect. Clearly this appreciation has continued to be maintained. Now, The Monster does raise an interesting point.

Outside of being able to sell tickets, from a competitive standpoint, Berlanga has done nothing to warrant the golden ticket to face Canelo. He’s never held a title and his current competition level is mundane at best. Beating Plant would be the first concrete proof that The Chosen One earnestly belongs on the elite level.

In this regard, a duel between Plant and Berlanga makes perfect sense. Even better, the two recently had a public spat that stoked the flames of their animosity. Let’s hope this ember of anger bursts into real life sanctioned firefight.
