Joe Cordina Gets UD Over Flores, Wants Title Shot Next
In just his second bout of the year, UK import Joe Cordina (19-1, 9 KO’s) defeated Gabriel Flores Jr. by way of unanimous decision. With the win, Cordina, ranked #6 (WBO), #10 (WBC) and #15 (IBF) also picked up the secondary international lightweight title. Armed with victory, his trophy, and ranking, Cordina has ambition to fight for the world title next and WBO champion Abdullah Mason is a prime candidate.
Mason took control of the vacant title in his last grueling battle with Sam Noakes back on November 22. Clearly Cordina does not want to allow the Cleveland-born boxer any real time to enjoy the throne before tossing him out.
“100% (I want Mason), obviously! With performances like that, I can’t compete, but don’t worry. When the opposition becomes better then I step up my game. That’s a fight that I’d love. Eddie [Hearn] knows I‘ve been chasing these big fights for ages.” ~ Joe Cordina
Later, Eddie Hearn, Cordina’s Matchroom Boxing promoter, would co-sign his fighter’s post-fight sentiments.
“I think Joe is a serious lightweight. He was disappointed with his performance – I thought it was great! I thought his engine was great. That puts him at #1 contender for Abdullah Mason, that’s a hell of a fight. Let’s go straight into that fight in March or April [in] Cleveland [Ohio], Cardiff [Wales], wherever they want to do it!” ~ Eddie Hearn
