Jose Benavidez Expects David to Notch a KO Win Over Morrell
Shortly after turning pro, Regular WBA light heavyweight boxer David “Osvary Morrell” Morrell (11-0, 9 KO’s) began chasing interim WBC 175-pound champion David “The Monster” Benavidez (29-0, 24 KO’s). Yet, for a good stretch of time, Team Benavidez felt that there were bigger fish to fry. Thankfully for Morrell, that is now a thing of the past as the two have officially signed off to face one another. Now that the fight is contracted however, Jose Benavidez Sr., The Monster’s father and chief second, says the fight will not go the distance.
In a recent brief interview with Fight Hype, Benavidez Sr. articulated his thoughts on the matter with more clarity.
“To be honest with you, I think that David got all the experience. I think that David will stop him in about eight rounds . . . I think it’s going to be a great fight, I mean I think it’s a better fight than fighting Jesse Hart, so it’s good. Everybody is super excited, everybody’s talking about it and I am glad. A lot of people said we were running from him, that we were scared! Come on man, now that we got the fight, some people are saying he has no experience!”
LET ME REINTRODUCE MYSELF
As Benavidez Sr. alluded, there has long existed a great deal of desire to see these two go head-to-head. This originates back to when both were housed in the super middleweight division. Luckily, that miss can now be rectified one division north. The fight will also be telling because neither competitor had the outing that they wanted in their last affair.
In his case, Benavidez fought Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his light heavyweight debut. Despite winning by unanimous decision, the lasting opinion on the night held the reliable offensive dynamo simply as being rather flat. In the aftermath of that perceived dud, Benavidez admitted that his hand was injured and promised a better showing in his next appearance. As for Morrell, in the eyes of many, he fell a bit short of expectation when facing veteran boxer Radivoje Kalajdzic.
Like The Monster, Morrell collected a unanimous decision victory when the common thought was he’d either stop or defeat him in spectacular fashion. Neither took place. By facing one another, Benavidez and Morrell can both turn in an exciting performance as well as settle their long simmering grudge. Or, perhaps put in the first chapter of a longer standing feud. In either case, this impending duel should be a good one as each is looking for a highlight reel win. Let’s hope that everyone remains injury free so we can finally get to this scrap in the ring.
