Navarrete Should Take On Foster or Suarez After Nunez Knockout
Unified 130-pound champion Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete (40-2-1, 33KO) scored a huge stoppage over one-time IBF champion Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez (29-2, 27KO). Looking at the future, the unified champion should either rematch Charly Suarez or face WBC champion O’Shaquie “Ice Water” Foster.
For some reason, Sugar decided to box instead of applying pressure and making it a war early. This resulted in him losing the first five rounds as Vaquero pressed forward, landing hard right hands and uppercuts.
In the closing rounds, Sugar finally decided to give up the boxing game plan and went to war. He landed hard shots to the body while Navarrete was up against the ropes. However, his change in strategy was too little too late. Navarrete closed the show with hard combination shots that closed the left eye of Nunez. This forced the referee to call a halt to the fight in the eleventh round.
With this fight in the rearview mirror, he has two fights on the table that fans would like to see. His win against Suarez (18-0, 10KO) was later changed to a no-contest after a replay showed it was a punch that caused the fight-ending cut. In addition, many fans believe Navarrete would have probably lost the fight if it had continued.
Then there is another huge unification with Foster (24-3, 12KO), who many feel has the style that could give Navarrete problems. Whatever direction Team Navarrete chooses to go in, they are clearly in the driver’s seat.
