Oscar De La Hoya Knows Ryan Garcia has Taken a Big Stock Hit
Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya must point the finger at his fighter, “King” Ryan Garcia, as well as Devin “The Dream” Haney, for the lack of interest in seeing a rematch. The boxing community isn’t interested in seeing them fight each other again after their terrible performances.
De La Hoya is trying to do damage control by claiming Haney’s stock took a hit in a boring fight against Jose Ramirez. Indeed, The Dream didn’t do himself any favors by fighting scared, but what Garcia did was much worse.
After getting knocked down by one-time junior welterweight champion Rolando Romero, King completely checked out mentally. He did nothing for the remainder of the fight. In addition, he was seen crying on camera, which brought up questions about his mental instability.
Despite testing positive for a banned substance in the Haney fight on April 24, Garcia’s marketability didn’t take a hit. In fact, his popularity increased somewhat. The reality is Garcia’s selling power has taken a serious hit, and De La Hoya knows it.
Instead of trying to save face, the Golden Boy Chairman should give the Californian fighter a tongue-lashing. Trying to provide cover-fire for his fighter will only hurt Garcia even more down the line.
