Lamont Roach Jr. picks up another win!
The undefeated super featherweight prospect Lamont Roach Jr. stepped up his level of competition against multiple title challenger veteran Jonathan Oquendo.
In the early rounds of the fight, the young prospect had trouble with the rough and rugged veteran. Oquendo would get inside and attack the body early. He even caused bleeding for the prospect.
Roach Jr. would make the adjustments as the fight would continue, using more of his boxing skills and giving angles. However, in the fourth round, the veteran hurt the prospect with a hard body shot that had him retreating.
The middle rounds saw both men be successful. The veteran was effective with getting on the inside landing body shots and making the young prospect uncomfortable.
Roach Jr. was able to use the counters while evading punches using his superior footwork. However, in the eighth round after several warnings, the ref deducted one point for an use of leading with the head. This could be the difference between a win or loss.
As the fight was coming to a close, Roach was landing some good combinations and uppercuts while being effective fighting off the back foot. However, the veteran fighter came to fight; landing a body shot that made the young challenger stop dead in his attack.
The judges scored it an unanimous decision for Roach, who is now both the WBO International/NABO featherweight titlist.
