Andy Ruiz Loves the Idea of Meeting Deontay Wilder in the Ring!
Former unified heavyweight champion Andy “The Destroyer” Ruiz (34-2, 22KOs) is eager to return to the top of the heavyweight division. The Destroyer is gearing up for an important fight with former world title challenger Luis Ortiz on September 4. While he’s not looking past a very dangerous and formidable Ortiz, he has his sights set on possibly tussling with former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (42-2-1, 41KOs).
Ruiz was briefly the man of the division after his huge upset win over Anthony Joshua in June of 2019. However, his reign would be short lived after he was thoroughly dominated in the rematch six months later. He has only fought once since the loss to Joshua, defeating Chris Arreola last May. That said, the former champion is hoping to ramp up the competition in a hurry! In an interview with Fight Hub TV, Ruiz answered a question about fighting Wilder.
“I feel I just got to get this win first against Luis Ortiz. Like I said, it’s a hard opponent. But of course I would love to fight Wilder, if he comes out of retirement! I don’t know if he says that he is going to come out of retirement, but I would love to fight him. We’re both under PBC and Al Haymon, so I think that fight would be easy to make and maybe right here at the Staples [Center].”
A fight between these two makes sense. Although Ruiz mentioned that Wilder is retired, that’s not the case. Wilder mentioned the possibility of retirement but hasn’t yet formally announced such a decision. In fact, rumblings of The Bronze Bomber returning are already stirring. Frank Warren claims the former champion is looking to return in October. Additionally, Wilder’s promoter, Shelly Finkel, has also talked on his fighter’s comeback. So, if he gets the urge to come back and fight, I’m sure fans would sign up to see these two former champions duke it out.
