Gary Antuanne Russell Foretells Mega-Fight with Boots Ennis
Junior welterweight contender Gary Antuanne Russell (17-0, 17KO) is eyeing a future showdown with IBF Interim welterweight titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28KO). The potential bout would add to the pair’s shared history of clashes in the amateurs. Russell defeated Boots three out of the four times they met. Boxing fans who are aware of this are curious to see how things would look now that they are both professionals.
EYEING A SHOWDOWN WITH A FOE FROM HIS PAST
The young, undefeated contender expressed wanting to move up to welterweight. While speaking with the media, Russell explained why a fight with Ennis would be a big event down the line.
“I believe that would be Boots Ennis, if anything. Because we had our amateur falling outs or our matches, and I’m pretty sure some people want to see him redeem himself. Some people just want to see how it’s going to look due to us both being professionals now and stuff like that. I’ll catch you on the backend; we’re going to make some nice money.”
Russell is within eyeshot of a world title fight with a number two ranking by the WBC. In his last outing, he made extremely quick work of Kent Cruz with a first-round stoppage on August 12. Ennis is seen as a formidable force in the welterweight division and is waiting for his turn at a world title shot.
Although Russell holds multiple wins over Ennis in the amateurs, it is safe to say Boots is far from the fighter he was back then.
