Sebastian Fundora Favors Facing Crawford Over Errol Spence
In his latest tour of duty, super welterweight fighter Sebastian “The Towering Inferno” Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KO’s) was crowned the WBO and WBC 154-pound champion. Fundora pulled this off by dethroning the former WBO champion Tim Tszyu in a very bloody and action-packed war. Snagging the vacant WBC title was icing on the cake. Things remain sweet for Fundora considering he has both former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. and two-time undisputed champion Terence “Bud” Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) clamoring for a fight.
Over the past several weeks, this match, which began as Tim Tszyu versus Keith Thurman, has gotten as tangled as a fork full of spaghetti. In the final stretch of fight preparations, Thurman suffered an injury which is how Fundora slid into the picture in the first place. Meanwhile, Bud appealed to the WBO stating that he was moving up and wanted to fight the winner. At the same time, Spence was circling the waters and publicly expressed his interest.
Now that Fundora officially has won and is holding two trump cards, his opinion at the moment is paramount. And when it comes to The Towering Inferno, he has his eyes set on Crawford.
“Errol Spence is a great opportunity – a match made in heaven, but Terence Crawford is the best fighter in the world! I would like to fight him!”
THE PECKING ORDER
It is good to hear that Fundora is standing firm on which one of the two combatants that he wants to duel and why. It’s also good news for boxing purists. There were some rumblings that, if Tim Tszyu prevailed, he had designs on dropping the WBO title so that he could face Errol Spence Jr. without any political entanglements. This did not sit well with some because in his very last performance, Spence was battered from pillar to post by Crawford.
Facing the losing, and potentially damaged, fighter over the victorious, undefeated and highly-decorated Bud Crawford seemed like backwards thinking. Thankfully, this will not be an issue when it comes to The Towering Inferno. Fundora, on countless occasions now, has proven that he is full of heart, in-fighting prowess and a willingness to rumble with anyone in the ring. So, minus injury or any last minute backroom deals, it will be interesting to see how The Towering Inferno and Bud line-up in the ring.
