Ryan Garcia Drops Reynoso; Picks Up Goossen
When it comes to former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan “KingRy” Garcia (21-0, 18KOs), expect the unexpected. The talented unbeaten contender is always in the news for one reason or another and in recent months, it has not been for good reasons. In this case, the news he dropped was quite shocking. In a statement released, he revealed he would no longer be trained by Eddy Reynoso. The trainer nominated as 3KingsBoxing’s 2021 Trainer of the Year is being replaced by Joe Goossen.
Garcia hasn’t fought since stopping Luke Campbell in January 2021. He will begin 2022 with ending a four-year professional relationship with one of boxing’s best trainers. The move is surprising.
Goossen, is an extremely respected trainer who has built multiple world champions. That list includes the late Diego Corrales, Joel Casamayor, Michael Nunn, Amir Khan, and Sergey Lipinets just to name a few.
Goossen is a no-nonsense guy. He’s very dedicated to the sport of boxing. Something that his new charge in Garcia, is constantly questioned about. The 23-year-old from California will debut with his new trainer on April 9 against Emmanuel Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs).
Will these two be a match made in boxing heaven? Only time will tell. It certainly will be interesting to see how this working relationship plays out.
