What’s Next for Shawn Porter?

More times than not, a loss drops your stock. Although, in this instance, that’s not the case. After losing a close split-decision to Errol Spence in their unification bout, Shawn Porter’s stock has risen.

A massive underdog heading into the fight, he exceeded expectations so much so that a lot of fans would be more than happy to see him and Spence do it again. However, let’s look at his options beyond Spence.

Yordenis Ugas

I know you’re probably saying “why a rematch with Ugas?” Let’s be honest, Porter escaped with what most people consider a “gift” decision. Their fight had action and was truly competitive. On top of that, neither guy’s stock has dropped since their March meeting. Ugas is coming off a dominant unanimous decision victory over Omar Figueroa.

Keith Thurman

Okay, now I got your attention. Believe it or not, these two men have unfinished business. Back in June of 2016, these two waged battle. It almost mirrored Spence-Porter, as it was a fast-paced action-packed fight. Ultimately, Porter would have find himself on the wrong end of another close decision loss. Although, many people felt he was the victor.

Manny Pacquiao

If he can’t get an immediate rematch with Spence, how about giving him a shot at the WBA champion, Manny Pacquiao? Pacquiao may not want to hear this, but this match-up could very well happen. This would be a dangerous fight for both men, in particular Pacquiao.

Remember Jeff Horn? I’m sure Pacquiao does. The pressure and pure strength he possessed provided all kinds of problems. Now, imagine how he’d do against a much better, more athletic version of Horn. Maybe better or possibly worse, who knows? We could find out in 2020.

Whoever he faces next, the fight will be entertaining. He must, however, find a way to not only be ultra competitive, but get over the hump and secure the victory as he did against Danny Garcia last September.

  1. I’m pretty sure Shawn Porter is the last guy Freddy Roach is going to put Manny in the ring with, so we can scratch that off the list. I agree Porter was given a slight gift vs Ugas, but I dont want to see that fight again. That was ugly, even for a Porter fight. Their styles really dont mesh. Thurman would be my #2 pick for Porter, but that really needs a title. Why are we not talking about Porter vs Crawford? Can that fight not be worked out? I seriously doubt Errol wants to get back in the ring with Porter again. Fighting Porter seems to take years off your career, just like fighting Ruslan. So i dont know where Porter goes from here. I dont see anyone other than Ugas willing to get in the ring with him. Porter isnt dirty, but hes really rough.
