Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall Targeting 2023 Rematch!
While it took ten years for them to fight a second time, the third bout for Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (13-0, 2 KO’s) and Savannah “The Silent Assassin” Marshall (12-1, 10 KO’s) should come much quicker! According to Ben Shalom of Boxxer Promotions, while speaking to Sportsmail, Shields’ and Marshall’s teams are already trying to hammer out a deal with a rematch in the summer of 2023.
“We’re talking already. Claressa has an MMA commitment, and I’d like to see the rematch in the summer of next year. This iconic rivalry has broken boundaries for the sport and it needs to be cherished. The numbers it’s done are remarkable; it’s broken all records.”
“A lot of people are saying it was wide, but I don’t think it was that wide. Marshall doesn’t think it was that wide. She feels she stuck to a game plan, and maybe she’ll look back and work out what she could have done differently. But she wants the rematch; she’ll want it over 12 rounds. She’s going to take the rest of the year off. It’s October now already and it’s been an extremely grueling camp and intense 12 months. But she’s convinced she has what it takes to beat Claressa.”
LET’S GET IT ON!
In their last tour of duty, these two females went head-to-head as the headliner of a historical all-women’s card. When the dust had settled, Shields walked away with Marshall’s WBO strap, which crowned Shields as the undisputed 160-pound champ. It was the second time that she has had this distinction and the third time she’s been undisputed.
Prior to their second encounter, both ladies had a great deal to say about the other. Yet, in the initial aftermath of the brawl, the two women lavished the other with praise and respect. When asked, and before she could exit the ring, T-Rex stated that she was open to providing The Silent Assassin a rematch in the States. Now it seems that is what is in the works at the moment. Given the history and the competitive nature of the title fight, there is little doubt that the rematch would be any less exciting.
