Majority draw ends up with low average
Adonis Stevenson and Badou Jack fought to a majority draw over the weekend in Toronto. Jack was Stevenson’s toughest opponent in a quite some time. While it was watched on PPV in Canada, it was shown live on Showtime in America as the main event of a split doubleheader with the Gary Russell Jr vs Joseph Diaz featherweight title bout in Maryland.
The ratings are in for the bout, it peaked at 611K and averaged 535K. It was a good fight between both men but the ratings are a bid disappointing, while Showtime has been putting up good cards all year they have struggled in this department.
The bout however did not disappoint as it was a good back and forth affair. Stevenson took most of the early rounds but faded down the stretch. Jack took over in the second half of the fight, taking control from the seventh round on. That is until Stevenson who seemed to run out of gas had to dig deep and landed a perfect body shot that affected Jack late in the tenth round.
Jack gave away the first half of the eleventh round still affected by the blow to the body. One could argue that the body shot landed by Stevenson may have well helped him retain his title.
Whether or not the two men will meet again remains to be seen as the bout was close enough to warrant a rematch. With Stevenson however we just don’t know what he will do next. He is obligated to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk next but we’ll see.
