Jeremias Ponce And Subriel Matias Targeting A Fourth Quarter Clash!
The junior-welterweight division is being moved around like pieces on a chessboard. This has opened up things for the IBF final eliminator between top contender Jeremias “Jere” Ponce (30-0, 20KO) and Subriel “El Orgullo de Maternillo” Matias (18-1, 18KO).
THE BACKSTORY
These two competitors have been on a collision course since 2021 after winning their respective semi-final bouts. Ponce fighting outside of his native country of Argentina, traveled to the United Kingdom and stopped fast rising prospect Lewis Ritson in dominating fashion. The victory placed him in the mandatory spot awaiting an opportunity to fight for the title.
Matias in a similar position during the IBF’s four-man tournament in May, turned in a top-notch performance taking out a very tough Batyrzhan Jukembayev in eight hard-fought rounds.
The stage was finally set for both fighters to claim the right to face unified champion, Josh Taylor. Things were put on hold as everyone was waiting to see what was going to be Taylor’s next move, as rumors surfaced he was eyeing a possible showdown with WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford.
FANS CAN EXPECT FIREWORKS
Fast forward to 2022, and things have changed. First, Taylor is no longer the undisputed champion after dropping both the WBC and WBA titles. The IBF has moved forward with making the final fight of the tournament, and it appears they have a supposed date.
3kingsboxing has confirmed there is a tentative agreement in place for the final eliminator to take place on October 8. Boxing fans can expect fireworks as it will be an all-action affair with both fighters willing to come forward and not looking to take a step backward.
Adding more intrigue to their possible fight, the winner could be looking at being crowned IBF champion. That is if Taylor decides to vacate by moving up after a possible rematch with Jack Catterall. Fans should mark this date on the calendar in anticipation of a great eliminator.
