Last minute hijinks could derail the Jermell Charlo v Brian Castaño undisputed match

According to a recent ESPN Knockout report, the fight between WBA Super, IBF and WBC World super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (34-1, 18 KO’s) and WBO World super welterweight champion Brian Castaño (17-0-1, 12 KO’s) is off. Their super welterweight contest was to determine who the undisputed champion of the division was. It would have been the first time there was an undisputed 154-pound champion in the four belt era. Now, for the moment, that historic match is being trashed.

Apparently when inspecting the gloves, Team Castaño found a balloon in Charlo’s glove. Finding this irregularity unprofessional and unacceptable, Team Castaño has chosen to walk away from the bout. While many might think this is a ploy to secure more money, Team Castaño assures it’s simply about the principle.

“Charlo’s right glove has a balloon and that glove cannot be approved. The commissioner gave us the reason at 3 in the afternoon. Charlo’s representative called Jermell’s coach, Derrick [James], they said that they could go in 2 hours and the Texas commissioner said ‘yes’. At 5, they came with a bodyguard, they kicked our translator out and allowed Charlo to have a bodyguard and I never saw anything like it in my life. So far there is no fight. It is not for money. With that glove we do not fight, our gloves are fine.”

At this time, there is no telling how this situation will resolve itself. However, it’s incredibly hard to believe that this match-up does not still take place. At this late hour, with so much glory on the line, in all probability something will be worked out. Yet, one never can predict the next absurd or surreal episode that the sport of boxing will manufacture. So, regardless of how this plays out, 3kingsboxing will be there to report the story.
