Team Usyk Open to a Fight With Chisora

Former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (17-0, 13ko), is currently the WBO mandatory challenger. He will be watching from the sidelines for the results of the mega rematch between unified champion Andy Ruiz Jr and Anthony Joshua on December 7 in Dubai.

The former undisputed champion fought this past October in Chicago, making the heavyweight debut against veteran Chazz Witherspoon. Shortly after the contest the victorious Ukrainian Olympic gold medalist made it very clear of wanting to fight for the world heavyweight crown next. As it goes in boxing, nothing is written in stone. Well now, instead of taking another long layoff, it seems Team Uysk could be persuaded to take a stay-busy fight.

In an interview with Sky Sports, manager Egis Klimas expressed openness to another fight. He would even name the target as none other than the elder statesman of boxing, Derek Chisora.

“We don’t know what happens on December 7. But if it is possible to fight in between and not to wait for another six months, I think Chisora will be a good fight for Uysk.”

PUTTING THIS UNDER A MAGNIFYING GLASS

This is actually not a bad idea given the circumstances. Many pundits felt that following the Witherspoon bout, it was hard to judge how the former undisputed champion would stack up against a more polished combatant. Entertaining the possibility of fighting someone of the caliber of the British heavyweight that has been steamrolling opponents as of late is the just the spice needed.

There is much to gain if Usyk is able to easily handle the veteran fighter. Even better if he can score the knock out. It would lay to rest some of the concerns about how he measures up in the land of the giants.

However, if there is one person who would have something to say about this, its former WBO champion Joseph Parker.

Parker was set to face Chisora before being forced to pull out. Now, wind of team Usyk taking interest has sparked the New Zealand native to add his two cents as well.

Fighters like the former undisputed champion need to stay busy and relevant in boxing’s most celebrated division. If this fight can materialize, stylistically it has the makings of a fan-friendly affair.
