Teofimo Lopez Could Be Looking To Hire Trainer Eddy Reynoso

Typically when fighters suffer their first defeat, there is a change inside the team. A fresh face is brought in to help said fighter get back to where they once were or get over the hump completely. Former unified lightweight champion Teofimo “The Takeover” Lopez (16-1, 12 KO’s) hints at working with famous trainer and 2021 3Kings Boxing Trainer of the Year Eddy Reynoso.

Lopez has been on an awkward downward spiral since losing to current unified champion George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr in November 2021. The Brooklyn native has openly admitted to having thoughts of taking his own life on a few occasions. Furthermore, he has been all over social media posting several disturbing comments about his personal well-being. These are things that have the boxing community wondering if his mental state is fractured.

NEW DIVISION POSSIBLY A NEW TRAINER

News has been circulating that Lopez will be fighting in the junior welterweight division, and that top contender Arnold Barboza Jr (26-0, 10ko) is viewed as the next opponent. With this move could also come a new trainer in Reynoso. He famously trains the undisputed super middleweight champion, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

During an interview with ESNEWS, Lopez was initially reluctant to talk about Reynoso replied. However, he did open up about the possibility of training with Reynoso and made it clear his father will still be the main voice in his ear.

“I love the connection. You know I’ve talked to Canelo a few times […] we will see, just give it some time. You know my father, he’s always going to be my main coach, my number one, my guy. So I will always hold it down for him.”

This would be a good move both mentally and physically for Lopez. Being around a championship-winning atmosphere inside the aura of Reynoso and Alvarez could revitalize the former unified champion’s mindset.
