Top Rank Could Land Jaime Munguia A Canelo Alvarez Rematch
One super middleweight title challenger, Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34KO), could position himself for another shot at undisputed champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39KO). After signing with Top Rank, Munguia could face two top contenders, where a victory could lead to a rematch.
The boxing news cycle is buzzing as Munguia has exited the doors of Golden Boy Promotions and walked into the home of Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotional company. According to ESPN, the Mexican will remain with Zanfer Promotions but has signed a co-promotional multi-fight deal with Arum.
Munguia is coming off a loss to Alvarez in a spirited contest on May 5. Despite the loss, his stock has risen in the eyes of the boxing public due to his performance on the elite level.
A PATH BACK TO THE TITLE
By signing with the ESPN-based company, the Mexican could face Erik Bazinyan. The Armenian holds the #2 spot with the WBO. In his last outing, Bazinyan got a draw in a fight where he should have tasted defeat at the hands of Shakeel Phinn.
Then there is WBC’s #1 rated Christian Mbilli, who also signed a co-promotional deal with Top Rank. He has been on a tear and is scheduled to face three-time middleweight title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko on August 17. Providing he is victorious, a showdown with the one-time title challenger could be in play later down the line.
A win over either opponent puts Munguia right back into the title picture and places Top Rank in the Canelo Alvarez fight sweepstakes. As of the writing of this article, no official announcement has been issued by Team Munguia or Top Rank.
