Dalton Smith Shocks Subriel Matias; Remains Hush on Next Move

In his US debut, UK super lightweight fighter Dalton “Thunder” Smith (19-0, 14 KO’s) made a splash in a major way. Smith accomplished this by defeating the heavy-handed Subriel Matias by way of sixth-round TKO. With the win, Thunder collected Matias’ WBC 140-pound title in the spoils of war. This now stands as Matias’ third professional loss, yet first by knockout. In fact, this marked the first bout where the former champion was put on the canvas.

At the present time, it is not known in what direction Team Smith will move in from here. During his post-fight interview, neither Thunder nor his Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, mentioned any concrete notions about what the plan is now. Naturally though, as a champion, one would have to think that unification was on his mind. Along this line of thinking, his fellow belt-holders in the division are Teofimo Lopez (WBO), Richardson Hitchins (IBF) and Gary Antuanne Russell (WBA).

Currently, Lopez has a January 31 dance date with Shakur Stevenson which obviously ties him up. With that being said, neither Russell nor Hitchins have anything penciled in the books about an upcoming fight. So, for the time being, we all will have to play the waiting game. Yet, ideally we could have a unification bout being announced sooner than later.
