Oscar Valdez vs Andoni Gago possible for early 2019
WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez (24-0, 19 KOs) could return to action against Andoni Gago (20-3-3, 6K Os) of Spain. If negotiations go as planned, the potential bout will take place on January 12.
The undefeated Mexican star hasn’t fought since his highly charged battle with former super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg. Both fighters sent the StubHub Center crowd into a raucous, as they brawled back-and-forth for featherweight glory. Subsequently, Valdez would come out on top, but have his tooth knocked out and jaw broken in the process. Unfortunately for the champion, his injuries would sideline him for the remainder of the year.
Andoni Gago, thirty-three, is relatively unknown to boxing fans and hasn’t seen much action against top-level competition. In March of 2017, the Spaniard was knocked out by Lee Selby inside of nine rounds. Since then, he has strung together four victories and could become a household name if he defeats Valdez.
The purposed bout should give Valdez a chance to test his jaw before moving forward and challenging the other champions.
