William Zepeda Hopeful of Meeting Mercito Gesta in the Ring
William “Camaron” Zepeda (28-0, 24 KOs) is coming off a devastating second-round knockout over Jaime Arboleda on April 29. After such a dominant performance, hardcore observers are already wondering who is next for Zepeda. A future matchup could be against Filipino Mercito Gesta (34-3-3,17 KOs).
Zepeda spoke to the boxing media following his win over Arboleda. When asked about Gesta, the 26-year-old Zepeda said ‘bring it on’.
“It would be an honor to fight a person like Mercito Gesta who is a very disciplined fighter . . . I’m open to whatever, but I would love to share the ring with him.”
Gesta scored the most significant win of his career on March 19, when he scored a split decision victory over former IBF junior lightweight champion Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz.
PEOPLE ARE TALKING
Zepeda is ranked third by the WBA, fifth by the WBC, and sixth by the WBO at 135. Gesta is currently unranked. However, his win over Diaz suggests he’s in the mix at lightweight. Also, put this into consideration: both Zepeda and Gesta happen to share the same promoter, Golden Boy. It would be an entertaining scrap that would interest the hardcore sect.
The early word is that a Zepeda – Gesta matchup could happen in late June. If media heads are talking about a potential date, then it’s a probability that something may be at play. One would not be surprised if Golden Boy is already working behind the scenes attempting to make that match. This potential fight is something to keep an eye on.
