Pierce O’Leary Stops Maxi Hughes To Open Azim Domestic Bout
Undefeated 140-pound contender “Big Bang” Pierce O’Leary (19-0, 11KO) stopped crafty veteran Maxi “Maximus” Hughes (29-9-2, 6KO) in five. Ranked #6 by the WBC, he could engage in a fight with #8-ranked Adam “The Assassin” Azim (14-0, 11KO) in a big domestic-level fight.
Fighting in his home country of Ireland, Big Bang stalked and pressured the replacement fighter Hughes, landing thunderous shots. Realizing the older fighter couldn’t hurt him, O’Leary repeatedly landed punishing right hands that closed Maximus’ left eye. The veterans’ corner had seen enough and didn’t allow their fighter to come out for the sixth round.
With this victory, O’Leary picked up the lightly regarded IBO title. Although his team has a desire to face WBC champion Dalton Smith, a fight with Azim seems more likely. O’Leary likes coming forward and throwing punches in bunches, which would make an entertaining battle with Azim.
The Assassin is a slick boxer with an aggressive nature as well. His defense and ability to fight behind the jab would be a problem for O’Leary. Furthermore, he has the power to make the Irishman think twice about rushing in like a bull seeing red. Because they both are ranked inside the top 10, the fight could be ruled a title eliminator.
Azim is available and is coming off an incredible performance against Kurt Scoby. This fight can be made easily, considering both fighters’ promotional companies fight on the sports app DAZN.
