David Benavidez Bringing a Grudge into Caleb Plant Bout!
The next time WBC interim super middleweight champ David “Red Flag” (26-0, 23 KOs) Benavidez enters the ring, it will be in a grudge match against ex-IBF 168-pound champion Caleb Plant (21-1, 13 KOs). As 3Kings Boxing previously reported, the two have agreed to a battle early in 2023. It’s a matchup that has been talked about for years.
NOT THAT IMPRESSED
Benavidez is ecstatic about the fight and the fact that the bout will air on pay-per-view. During an exclusive interview with media outlet FightHype, the 25-year-old says he’s already in shape and can’t wait for training camp. When asked to compare Plant to the rest of the division, Benavidez was quite frank in how he views his fighting ability and accomplishments.
“You’ve got to give credit where credit is due. I don’t consider Caleb as one of the best. I just know that he got a title before. He’s up there for a reason; he’s a world champion for a reason. So, you got to give credit where credit is due. But there are a lot of good guys right now at 168.
[…] I feel like I’m the best, physically and mentally. I feel like I have more power, more speed. I have a lot of experience, too. So, I’m just ready to put everything on the line.”
HOLDING NOTHING BACK
It’s no secret that the two do not like each other. Both men have insulted one another on social media and during interviews. As a result of the animosity, Benavidez says he plans to give his rival a beating he will never forget.
“This fight, for me, is 100 percent personal with Caleb Plant. I’m really looking to go in there and fucking beat the shit out of him. That’s my plan. I don’t care about no decisions […] My plan is to go in there and do what I know I could do to Caleb Plant, and that’s going to be putting a beating on him worse than Canelo.”
You have the fast pace, pressure, and activity of Benavidez versus the boxing ability of Plant. Benavidez hopes to use his size, length, and work-rate to swarm. Plant wants to use his jab and movement to frustrate. The WBC has ruled that the winner of Benavidez – Plant is supposed to face the reigning undisputed champion, Canelo Alvarez.
It wasn’t that long ago that it looked unlikely that these two would ever settle their differences in the ring. But this is a sport that’s full of surprises. To the delight of many fans, they will get it on. Let’s hope the fight lives up to the billing and is as good as their years of trash-talk.
