Will Conor Benn Show Up Drained Against Garcia?
On September 12, England’s Conor “The Destroyer” Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) will face reigning WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs). If Benn has any chance of pulling off the victory, one of the biggest battles may take place before he ever steps into the ring: his struggle to make the 147-pound welterweight limit.
During several interviews with the boxing media, Benn has been open about the difficulty of getting back down to welterweight. Questions continue to linger over whether the 29-year-old can comfortably make the limit. Benn, however, remains adamant that he will hit 147 pounds and be physically prepared to perform at his best on fight night.
THE DANGER OF THE WEIGHT CUT
Those assurances have done little to silence concerns throughout the boxing community. Benn has not competed at the welterweight limit since April 2022. Following his 17-month suspension in 2023 after testing positive for a banned substance, he has campaigned at either junior middleweight or middleweight. Yet, despite spending years competing above 147, Benn pushed for a return to welterweight and called for a showdown with Garcia. That is where the danger lies.
Making weight is one thing. Doing so without severely compromising the body is another. If Benn has to put himself through an extreme cut to reach 147, how much will that process take out of him physically? Even with roughly 36 hours between the private Friday morning weigh-in and Saturday evening’s fight, there is no guarantee that he will be able to fully rehydrate and recover.
THE FINAL CONCLUSION
If Benn arrives in the ring weakened, depleted, or unable to perform at his normal level, his chances against Garcia could quickly disappear. Garcia is too talented and dangerous to give away any physical advantage.
For Benn, making 147 is only the first challenge. The real question is whether he can make the weight and still have enough left to survive, and win, on fight night.
