Ryan Garcia Could Unify With Teofimo Lopez After Fighting Conor Benn
WBC welterweight champion “King” Ryan Garcia has social media buzzing with talk of a fight against WBA champion “The Takeover” Teofimo Lopez. However, Garcia could be looking too far ahead, as business with “The Destroyer” Conor Benn needs to be handled first.
On September 12, King, the odds-on-favorite, will defend the WBC title against Benn. This fight was brewing long before either of them signed the contract. The Californian picked up the title after defeating the division’s weakest champion, Mario Barrios, on February 26.
A video has been circulating of Garcia on a phone call with Lopez, acknowledging they are supposed to fight. Now, this is contingent on the WBC champion being victorious against the British challenger.
PUMP THE BRAKES
Garcia shouldn’t be looking past Benn, either. He may not be an elite-level fighter, but he is good enough to defeat the WBC champion. Let’s not forget, we’ve seen Garcia quit in the fight against multi-divisional champion Gervonta Davis. He even mentally checked out after getting knocked down in defeat against Rolando Romero in 2025.
In fairness, The Destroyer didn’t look too good in the fight against two-time 140-pound champion Regis Prograis. His former promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, even said he wouldn’t beat a world-class fighter at welterweight. However, his athleticism, speed, and mental makeup are Benn’s most solid qualities. In addition, he seems to have a decent chin, which could spell trouble for the Californian on fight night.
If the plan is to face the WBA champion afterwards, then Benn definitely possesses the ability to spoil everyone’s plans. Garcia needs to take this fight more seriously than what is being shown on social media.
