Power-Punching Brandun Lee Discloses What Separates Him From the Rest at 140 Pounds
In 2021, junior welterweight Brandun Lee (24-0, 22 KOs) took the next step. He went from someone who received a lot of hype from insiders to now being viewed as one of the best young fighters in the sport. He’s coming off a seventh-round KO over Juan Heraldez in December of 2021. It’s the power that has fans and pundits buzzing as Lee has won his last fifteen fights by KO.
Starting to receive some respect from the world sanctioning bodies, Lee is ranked ninth by the IBF at 140 pounds. During an interview with Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast, the hard-punching up-and-comer explained what separates him from the others in the division.
WHAT MAKES HIM DIFFERENT?
“We all know I have power, and we all know I have speed. I have both god-gifted talents in the boxing world. Most of the time, you either have one or the other, and I have both of them […] There’s not a big puncher at 140, I can’t name one.”
He views himself as the only big puncher in the division. When you have a young, confident fighter who hits the scene, they are eager to call out a reigning world champ or high-profile guy. Not in this case. When asked by Custer if he’d like to face anyone in particular, Lee responded by saying no. He said the focus is on staying dedicated to his training. As long as he does his work in the gym and tends to business, he will fight anyone.
BIG GOALS
While noncommittal about sending a direct challenge, he was detailed and specific about his future aspirations. He has big goals for himself at 140 and beyond.
“I want to be a world champion. I want to be a unified world champion, and eventually, I want to move up to 147 and become a world champion. Those are my three top goals right now.”
Going by previous interviews, Lee believes he will win a world title by end of 2022. To achieve that, he has to continue to develop. In truth, big punchers who provide highlight-reel stoppages will always draw attention. But, you have to bring more to the table than TNT in your fists. Becoming a world champ and having staying power requires evolving into a complete fighter and getting tested. That has yet to happen, so far.
The focus should now be taking his game to an even higher level. If talent means anything, Brandun Lee looks to have what it takes to reach all that he aspires. Now, it’s time to prove it.
