Joe Cordina Expresses Frustration with Matchroom Over Match-making
IBF junior lightweight champion Joe “The Wizard” Cordina (16-0, 9KO) is eager to engage in a major unification bout. However, a recent social media post indicates that there is a disconnect between Cordina’s aspirations and the plans of Matchroom Boxing, his promotional company.
On April 22, Cordina reclaimed the IBF junior lightweight championship in a hard-fought split-decision victory over Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov. Immediately after the win, Cordina wasted no time in expressing his willingness to face any other champion in the division.
“Any single one of them. Anyone who’s got a belt, I’m happy to share the ring with them.”
CORDINA MAKES A SURPRISING CLAIM
Unfortunately, it appears that a unification fight may not materialize anytime soon for Cordina. Venting his frustration on social media, Cordina responded to fans questioning the absence of a scheduled fight. He placed the blame on Matchroom Boxing, suggesting that the company is prioritizing matchups that do not contribute significantly to his profile.
In the realm of Matchroom Boxing, one figure stands out, and that is Eddie Hearn. What makes the IBF champion’s statement surprising is the fact Hearn himself had previously expressed a desire to arrange a unification fight between Cordina and WBC champion O’Shaquie “Ice Water” Foster. Foster is coming off the biggest win of his career with a shocking victory over WBC featherweight champion Rey Vargas on February 11.
As of the writing of this article, there has been no official response from Eddie Hearn on the topic. The junior lightweight division is wide open and in dire need of someone to start making the move toward undisputed.
