Oscar De La Hoya Eyes Zepeda vs Stevenson Showdown In 2024
Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya is entertaining the idea of a fight between lightweight contender William “Camaron” Zepeda (29-0, 25KO) and WBC champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson (21-0, 10KO).
Boxing fans will be shocked by this one as it seems De La Hoya has had a change of heart. In 2023, he dropped a list of names he would love to put his fighter against, with Fearless being the exception. That isn’t the case anymore, as De La Hoya told members of the press that a fight could happen sometime in 2024.
“For this year? Yeah. Second quarter of this year or third quarter of this year, I would love that. Actually, Zepeda wants Shakur, he loves the fact that he can fight Shakur.”
HE ALWAYS WANTED THE FIGHT
According to the Golden Boy executive, Zepeda wanted to fight Stevenson even before his lackluster performance against Edwin De Los Santos.
“He always did. He always said that he [Stevenson] was the toughest guy out there.”
Zepeda would know how tough Stevenson is as they have a history that goes back to their amateur days. The Mexican is within an eyeshot of a title fight, ranked #2 WBC, WBA, #5 WBO, and #6 IBF. In his last outing, he scored an impressive knockout against veteran Mercito Gesta.
Stevenson has been trying to get into a fight with some of the bigger names in the division. With Vasyl Lomachenko set to possibly face George Kambosos for the vacant IBF title, the WBC could order Stevenson vs Zepeda. If De La Hoya is sincere, then boxing fans could see the fight happen.
